Salona & Klis Fortress

Go back with us to the 3rd century A.D. when Salona was one of the leading towns on the Adriatic Sea!

What we have planned?

We will meet in Split’s Riva around 10 am and head to Salona (Solin).

Tourists who visit Split usually do not visit ruins of the Roman city of Salona. It is a pity, since they are only five kilometers away from Split. Ruins are overshadowed by the popular Diocletian’s Palace, which was built later. Did you know that the great Roman Emperor Diocletian who built Diocletian’s Palace was born in Salona?

Life in Salona can be traced back to the first millennium BC when Greeks set up a marketplace here. Later on, when Romans conquered the region, a city was formed and became the capital city of Dalmatia. Most of Salona was destroyed in the 6th century during the invasions of the Avars and citizens of Salona took refuge in Diocletian’s Palace.

We will explore the history of ancient Salona and the ruins of its amphitheater, basilica, baptistery and other infrastructural objects.

First, we will visit 2nd century amphitheater with its underground channels. This 2nd century amphitheater had a capacity of up to 20,000 spectators. Venetians destroyed the amphitheater in the 17th century, stripping it of marble to use it for their palace.

One example of infrastructural object is top of the arches of a 1st century aqueduct where water came in from the nearby River Jadro.

If you love ruins or you have never seen many ruins, this is place you have to visit. Ruins are still lovely to see and worth a trip from Split!

Klis Fortress

Next on our itinerary is Klis Fortress. This medieval fortress is situated above a village bearing the same name – Klis. Due to its location, the fortress served as a major source of defense in Dalmatia, especially against Ottoman. The fortress is one of the most outstanding fortresses in Croatia and is not to be missed when in Split. Here are some reason why is that so. First, fortress offers killer view. The view from the top of the fortress alone is amazing, even locals go there to see the sunset! Another advantage is that you can wander around the grounds freely, there are no closed doors or ropes which take care of you so be careful – one misstep could land you at the bottom of a cliff. Klis Fortress is not included in the most popular attractions around. It is visited by 15,000 people a year. This means you will probably have fortress for yourself and make some pictures of the fortress without a single stranger in them. Another interesting thing about this location is that some scenes from TV series Game of thrones were shot here. It will be interesting to see the set of Meereen from Game of Thrones. If you are a Game of Thrones fan this is a must. Finally you will conclude that it’s a fun place to visit, you can easily spend a few hours walking around the fortifications.

Around 3 pm we will finish our tour of Salona and Klis Fortress and head back to Split. It will be late afternoon, so we recommend you spend rest of your day on some beautiful beach below Marjan. Maybe try for Kašjuni beach. It is combined rocky and sandy beach on the south side of Marjan. Or if you are up for more hot spot place we recommend Bačvice. Bačvice is the most famous beach of Split. It is located mere minutes from Diocletian’s Palace on foot. Bačvice is also a sports court, home to the world championships in the beloved water sport of Split – picigin. Picigin players are a common sight here even during the warmer days of winter, playing and enjoying this unique game.

Thank you for joining us on our trip and we hope you got some amazing pictures, well worth the trip.
