Have you had enough of swimming and snorkeling? Are you in the mood to go back to the 3rd century A.D. when Salona was one of the leading towns on the Adriatic Sea? Spend a day or a few hours wandering around Roman ruins!
Located in today’s town of Solin, right next to Split, Salona was an ancient city and the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Today these ruins are part of archaeological park; they are quite extensive, notifying to the importance of this colony under Roman rule.
You can spend up to three hours walking, climbing up and down the ruins and investigating the old Roman city of Salona. There is so much wonderful history here city buildings constructed 2nd century BC and 5 AD among others.
Start your exploration at Manastirine, which has been in use from the 2nd century BC until the destruction of the city in the 7th century. Tusculum Museum is museum that serves as a ticket office and souvenir shop. Episcopal Center was built when religious freedom prevailed. You can also find Thermae (public baths) characteristic of Roman towns.
These impressive ruins have good signage to explain the site, which has an interesting mix through Roman and early Christian period. We think you will enjoy mostly in the amphitheater because it is quite easy to see the way it functioned. The place is relatively uncrowded, which makes it more enjoyable. There are plenty of explanatory signs in English as well as Croatian ad it will be worth your while.
The Klis Fortress is located in the village of Klis, north of Split. At the center of the hill there is a medieval fortress. It is built into a rocky ridge giving visitors an amazing view of the entire Split “metropolitan” area, Adriatic Sea and surrounding islands. Klis fortress has strategic position between mountains Kozjak and Mosor. Thanks to its position, it was important base for in defense of entire Dalmatia, especially when fighting Ottomans. More than 2000 years ago, Illyrian tribe Dalmatae have used it as a stronghold. Afterwards, it was Romans and finally it became a seat for several Croatian kings.
In last few years, Klis fortress served as filming location as one of the cities in TV series Game of Thrones. If you are a fan of this worldwide popular TV series, you probably already know what we are talking about. Famous fictional city-state from Game of Thrones series was introduced when Daenerys Targaryen and her army marched towards Meereen. The streets of Meereen were shot in Diocletian’s Palace in Split and on Klis Fortress. The major part of the fortress did not need additional editing . If you are really fan of the show, there is also an exhibition dedicated to this show. Exhibition is definitely triggered increased number of visitors of Klis Fortress. The exhibition includes photos from the set, some of the main characters like Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister at this beautiful place.
The fortress is not to be missed. Enjoy its amazing views, explore freely there are not any “do not enter!” parts. There are not any crowds. If you go during the off-season, you might even have the whole place to yourself. Do not forget to take the best photo ever with the most spectacular view in the background!
