This magnificent and unique tour takes you to Mostar and Međugorje. Tour the charming and picturesque towns of Mostar and Međugorje.
Start from Split
We will start early in the morning from Split. You have probably been staying in Split for a few days so you have visited all major sights. As you probably know, Split, Diocletian and his palace are bound by an unbreakable bond. The city expanded and developed through construction, renovations and reconstructions of the Palace. The most popular attractions in Split hide around and inside Diocletian’s Palace. Sites such as Diocletian’s Palace and Mausoleum, the Grgur Ninski Statue and the Cathedral and Bell Tower of St. Domnius are most important landmarks of Split and have set Split on UNESCO-designated World Heritage Site.
Today’s tour offers something different. We will meet in Split’s Riva, maybe have a cup of coffee and get on our air conditioned minibus. We will drive though Dalmatia inland and you will see some picturesque villages along the way. In a few hours’ time we will arrive to Međugorje.
A Catholic pilgrimage site, Međugorje is one of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s most famous cities. Međugorje is known for apparitions of the Virgin Mary to six local children since 1981. Today it is Europe’s third most important apparition site, where each year more than one million people visit. Most important sights include Saint James church, Križevac hill and Apparition hill. The last one is a very special place, very peaceful. Pleasant walk up the hill offers fantastic views. You could spend the day up there enjoying the peace. Climbing Križevac hill is quite difficult, but it is worth the effort. There are many people who climb with bare feet all the way up. This is a most quiet place where everybody prays in peace. You will have three hours to pick your own way how to enjoy here.
Afterwards, we will head to Mostar. Međugorje is situated southwest of Mostar, only a 45 minutes ride. Mostar is usually described as a town where east meets the west and where south meets the north. This town has been heavily damaged in last war in 1990’s and since than town is working hard to rebuild itself.
Key landmarks in Mostar include Old Town of Mostar with Old Bridge, Franciscan Church, Old mosque… We suggest you visit the most of them, starting with Old Town of Mostar. The view of UNESCO site Old Bridge is as perfect, it is absolutely breathtaking. Take a look at green Neretva River whose color comes from the high levels of copper in the region. The Old Bridge was built by the Ottomans in the 16th century. It was destroyed in November 1993 and since it has been rebuilt. Today it is not only popular with tourists, but also with adrenaline junkies. Many people on daily basis dive off the 24 meters high bridge to depths of only six meters.
Another sight to visit is Franciscan Church with its huge tower, a traditional Turkish house dating back to 1653 and one of the town’s 27 mosques.
While in Mostar, we suggest visit to local restaurants and tasting local food such as čevapčići – a traditional Bosnian dish of grilled meat. In the end, we you may want to take a look of local market selling everything from jewelry to lamps and candles.
Around 7 pm we will arrive to Split, just in time for you to enjoy in local atmosphere. Around this time of the day, local people head to Split’s promenade called Riva and choose to sit in one of cafes or restaurants for a cold drink. They chat with friends or acquaintances and comment on daily news, sports or politics. It is one thing in Split you cannot miss.
